I take my family there a couple of times a year for camping. The sailing is not the best, but can be Ok. My family likes it there because it isn't too crowded, there is good hiking, biking, water skiing, fishing and tolerable Windsurfing. There are better places to sail, but I always manage to have a good time there.

The best plce to sail is a day use area called Freeman Mesa, which is about half way up the lake on the West side. It has a nice grassy rigging area, but the launch can get a little muddy. The reach is only 1/4 mile or so, but enough for some good times. I am told that back in the good old days of windsurfing, the grass there would be full of sails, mostly Aspenites. On occasion we still see Clauss Obermeyer from Aspen, as well as a few other not so famous Aspen based sailors.

You need a big sail, like a 7 or 8 meter because the air is a bit thin at 8000+ ft. The wind comes up almost every sunny day at about 11:00 am due to thermals up the valley. The question is, will there be enough and how long will it last.

The water is a bit cold but not as bad as you may think.
